The Brazilian Senate approved a bill on Wednesday that would reduce sentences for those convicted of the attempted coup in early 2023, including former President Jair Bolsonaro, who was sentenced to 27 years in prison. The measure passed with 48 votes in favor and 25 against. Under the bill, Bolsonaro would remain incarcerated for another two years. The bill now goes to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for final approval, but he is expected to veto it with the support of the Federal Supreme Court. Lula himself was a victim of this coup on January 8, 2023, when Bolsonaro's supporters seized public buildings in Brasília shortly before the current president's inauguration, following his victory in the 2022 elections. According to Noticias Argentinas agency, Lula has always stated that his political rival "has to pay for attempting to destroy the democracy he carried out in this country. There's no point in complaining now. He knows it."
